New Manga Impression: Maou-sama Retry

Synopsis

Oono Akira is a working adult who suddenly finds himself awakening as the “Demon Lord” character that he has logged in as in the game that he manages. Upon his arrival, he meets a young child and takes them under his wing. But in bearing such a powerful title and abilities to back it up, Oono’s new life is anything but peaceful

The Good

This is the first time that this writer can remember that out of all the factors in a series, its the design of the main character that brings the main highlight. When you watch and read as many types of isekai stories as this writer has, you tend to get used to a certain standard set for the main hero in terms of looks whether they are transformed into another creature or whatever. The fact that this series went for a character design that you would mostly see done for a shady character is both funny and interesting.

It also helps that he has a pretty solid introduction to his general personality and the way that he questions everything and shows some genuine and realistic reactions adds a nice touch. It’s always good that an isekai series even attempts to place some logic in how it’s fantasy aspect works. Aside from the solid character and world introduction, the comedy also works itself well into the plot flow.

The Bad

While the overall foundation was formed differently from usual, there is still general isekai tropes to be found along with general character tropes. For one thing, there is the whole older male and child combo to take note of. This trope has been done in all kinds of manga and is clearly meant to draw in readers for heartfelt moments. Then there is the whole OP factor like with many, many isekai stories to be found.

Outside of the main character, there is a whole lot of generic points to be found in just two chapters alone and it’s mainly with the characters. Whether it be the small child with the sad backstory or the arrogant and righteous “hero” character, it’s been done before. Really the whole premise of the work is just the basic structure for any isekai involving the guy has been a programmer placed with a new image of fantasy layer.

Conclusion

The main character and the comedy of the series are the main reasons that a reader should stick with the series, even if it is only two chapters now. As stated, the main character is not only a refreshing change in image but also in personality given how he deals with his situation. It can’t be denied however that majority of the work is rather generic and the only thing that really saves everything aside from the main character is the way that the comedy works with him.
