First Impression: Miira no Kakaita

Synopsis

Sora Kashiwagi was a simple high school boy who lived independently with his aunt. One day he receives a package from his father and fears the worst as previous gifts from his self-proclaimed “adventurer” father left a less than pleasant impression given how they ranged from cursed items to killer spirits. He fears the when he receives a large coffin, but when it opens, he finds… a mummy no bigger than his hand?!

The Good

There have been all kinds of supernatural anime that had a sweet or cute theme to it, but none have tackled it the way this series seems to be. The first time you see the mummy character, you can’t help but think how exactly would a character like this work for what is clearly a slice of life/comedy/supernatural work? Quite adorably apparently, as not only was the art and animation able to make Mii-kun highly expressive but they managed to create a solid presentation on his personality as well.

In terms of plot it also holds an interesting point to it and holds a large potential for a wholesome and heart-warming story. There is a solid introduction and when it comes to the characters, they are rather charming in their own way and have some refreshing qualities from the usual character types that they look like. Generally, the episode just gives a rather light-hearted feel to it with and a highly interesting concept to it.

The Bad

Given how relatively simple the episode was, there isn’t much to mark in the episode as negative. If there was anything to nit-pick with the episode it would be how one-note the tone of the episode seems to be. Personally, there could have been a little more dynamic given to the characters, but that is a personal opinion. Other than this, the ending theme is also somewhat off given how it seems to be trying to make some sort of catchy dance sequence sets off a “meh” feeling for this writing.

Conclusion

Overall the anime episode presents a highly interesting story, endearing characters and a solid introduction for the series. The plot is simple but different and there is really a lot of charm to be found. The general tone of the episode may be hit or miss with some people but for the most pat it gives a solid introduction that makes you want to see what happens next. Really, simple but cute is the best way to describe the episode.
