The “Etrian Odyssey” franchise has a new game in development and “Etrian Odyssey V” director Shigeo Komori shares plans set up for it. Announced on Monday in an interview with Famitsu, it has also been revealed that the 10th anniversary of the Nintendo DS and 3DS dungeon-crawler RPG series will be coming up this year.
In his interview, Komori stated that for the new work, it would be the last time that the bottom screen of the Nintendo 3DS would be used to draw the map. Furthermore he stated that, “In order to respond to our supportive fans, I want to release a ‘festival-like’ work that can also be said to be another culmination [of the series].”
“Etrian Odyssey”, currently owned by Sega but was first published and developed by Altus is as stated a Nintendo DS and 3DS dungeon-crawler RPG series. It released its first titled in 2007 and most recently in 2016, the franchise released Etrian Odyssey V for Nintendo 3DS. On October 17, the game will be having a release in North America.
Other than the five titles, the franchise has also produced two remakes titled, “Etrian Odyssey Untold: The Millennium Girl” and “Etrian Odyssey 2 Untold: The Fafnir Knight.” There is also another work to be released on August 31 in Japan and that is a spin-off game entitled “Sekaiju to Fushigi no Dungeon 2” a.k.a. “Etrian Mystery Dungeon 2.”
With the first game of the series, it placed the player in a dungeon setting and using a first-person perspective, had them exploring the area in order to level up by collecting items and battling enemies. The main feature of the game which separated it from the usual RPG games is that it also made players draw out a map for each floor explored with the stylus at the bottom screen.
As for the latest title released, in comparison to the first it tells a story featuring the fictional land of Arcania and the world tree named Yggdrasil. Also in the story are four different races, all aim to pass the labyrinth and reach the top of the tree and solve the mystery.
For the gameplay, there is character customization added for the player and Earthlain (human), Celestrians (elves), Therians (beast-like humans), and Brounies (dwarves/hobbits), characters to choose to have in a party.
