When it comes to the live action adaptation of highly popular anime by Hollywood, not much good can be said about it. Whether it be the less than stellar “Dragon Ball Z” or the disappointing work that was “Ghost in Shell”, live action adaptations in the west have left its own distinct mark amongst anime fans.
Now with the announcement of an “One Piece”, a mixed reaction has been going all around. But, unlike with previous live action adaptations in the west, there is some slight reassurance tacked onto this piece with a statement by the executive producer himself, Marty Adelstein.
For those who may not know who he is, he’s an American television producer and is fully known as Martin Bruce “Marty” Adelstein. Prior to becoming a producer he was a partner and founding member of Endeavor Talent Agency.
In his years as a producer , he has worked the critically acclaimed 2011 film “Hanna” and ABC sitcom, “Last Man Standing.”
In his statement he speaks of his own fondness for the franchise saying that, “I’ve been a fan of ‘One Piece’ for 20 years. I am so honored that Shueisha and Oda-san have entrusted me with such a cherished iconic property,”
Prior to his statement, Oda himself even released a statement of his own for the upcoming piece.
He said, “In the last 20 years the conversation about a live-action adaptation has come up many times. I decided to go forward with the adaptation about three years ago. There were many twists and turns. I met a good partner…”
He shares his understanding that there may be those who are uneasy and he has placed a condition that he will never betray those who have supported him for the past 20 years. So he hopes that fans may actually look forward to the live action adaptation and keep updated with it.
Adelstein too makes his own promise and has said, “I will do everything in my power to make the ‘One Piece’ TV series an absolute success. While I expect this to be one of the most expensive shows ever done in television, the worldwide interest is tremendous and will be well worth the financial commitment.”
