A blast from the past comes for the long-time anime fans as the sci-fi work that is Akira makes an artistic return with a “Tribute to Otomo Exhibition” to be held on June 3 on the eighth floor of the Tower Records building located in Shibuya.
The exhibition is held in commemoration of the simultaneous release of the OTOMO: A Global Tribute to the Mind Behind Akira book in both France and Japan in January and North America in March. The book, which contains 80 contributions from the creator’s contemporaries, was made in honor of Katsuhiro Otomo’s win at France’s Angoulême International Comics Festival in 2015.
Akira first began as a manga series that was published in 1982 and ran for a total of 6 volumes before it ended in 1990. The story tells of a young man named Akira and his life within a dystopian, cyber-based Tokyo in 2019.
It was in 1988 that an animated film adaptation was made from the series and was directed by Katsuhiro Otomo. The story tells about Akira as he attempts to stop his friends Tetsuo Shima from using his newly awakened superpowers to release the titular esper. The film was first released in 1988 and earned a total of 750 million yen in the box office.
The exhibition will running until June 18 and those who take part of the event will be given informative talks over the course of the event’s run and a chance to view a VTR message from the creators. As an additional incentive for guests to stay at the event there will be commemorative goods also planned for fans to have of getting a souvenir.
