See the raccoons of “Rascal the Raccoon” in the aristocratic wear of the French in a character goods collaboration with the “Rose of Versailles” series. In celebration of the 45th anniversay of the of Rose of Versailles and the 40th anniversary of Rascal the Raccoon, the “Velbarascal”, a word combination between “Versailles no Bara” and “Araiguma Rascal” which results in the the title of “Rose of Rascal” collaboration was created.
The collaboration came to be when it was noted that the raccoon protagonist Rascal and the female protagonist Oscar’s names sounded similar when pronounced in Japanese.
Produced by Nippon Animation, an animation studio recognized for their animation adaptations of Western literature such as “Arabian Nights: Sinbad’s Adventures” a.k.a “Arabian Naitsu: Shinbaddo No Bôken”, the “Rascal the Raccoon” series was first released on January 2, 1997. Based on the children’s book titled “Rascal: A Memoir of a Better Era” the series tells of the adventures of a young boy and his pet raccoon.
On the other hand, the historical shoujo series titled “The Rose of Versailles” tells of a story in a completely different spectrum. Created by Riyoko Ikeda the series first started off as a manga that was first published in 1972 and spanned for 10 volumes. Then in 1979 an animation adaptation was made and ran for a total of 40 episodes and ended in 1980.
The series told the story of Oscar François de Jarjayes, a young woman whom was raised as a male by her father. As the Commander of the Royal Guard and the head guard for the safety of Marie Antoinette, Oscar’s tale is irrevocably tied with the historical tale of Marie Antoinette.
For the collaboration more than artwork depicting the Rascal cosplaying as Oscar, Andre, Fersen, and Louis XVI, while Rascal’s girlfriend Lily cosplays as Marie Antoinette, there is a line of character goods being featured.
The main items that are being featured as a kick off for the line is a body cream, which will be 1200 yen ($10.55 US) plus tax and solid perfume, which will be 950 yen ($8.35 US) plus tax. The first item will be released on May 10 while the latter will be released on June 24. Both items can be found at the Otona Joshi Biyori shop, which is located on Tokyo Character Street on the first floor of Tokyo Station, in Marunouchi, Chiyoda Ward, Tokyo, Japan.
