‘Tokyo Ghoul:re Invoke’ smartphone game gets Spring release

Another smartphone game inspired by Sui Ishida’s original Tokyo Ghoul manga series is slated to launch this coming Spring! Tokyo Ghoul:re Invoke, developed by Bandai Namco Entertainment, will both be available for iOS and Android devices. At the same time, this tap combo" role-playing game can be downloaded for free, with additional in-game purchases for items.

So how does it work?

Tokyo Ghoul:re Invoke will feature 3D Tokyo Ghoul character models. It will include both a story mode and a multiplayer battle mode.

In the game, players can form a team—composing of the game characters—and participate in battles. To launch an attack, players need to tap their characters’ icons. Also, characters have each of their own a special skill—in reference to the original manga. Players can unleash these skills filling up a character’s skill gauge through performing combo attacks.

Ishida first published the manga version of Tokyo Ghoul in Shueisha’s Weekly Young Jump in 2011. In 2016, Viz Media has acquired the license to publish the series in English language and it describes the story as follows:

“Ghouls live among us, the same as normal people in every way—except their craving for human flesh. Ken Kaneki is an ordinary college student until a violent encounter turns him into the first half-human half-ghoul hybrid. Trapped between two worlds, he must survive Ghoul turf wars, learn more about Ghoul society and master his new powers.”

Presently, Ishida is working on Tokyo Ghoul:re, its sequel story.

Apart from games, Ishida’s creation has also inspired two television anime series and original video anime (OVA), a stage play, and a live-action film adaptation that is slated to premiere in Japan this coming summer.
