The final trailer for Sonic the Hedgehog’s sequel is finally here, and fans are more excited than ever for its release. The trailer gives us a glimpse of what’s to come in the movie, and it looks like it’s going to be an action-packed adventure.

The returning blue hedgehog teams up with his new friend Tails to take on the evil Dr. Robotnik. This time around, the stakes are higher than ever, and Sonic will need all the help he can get to save the world. In the trailer, Sonic fights off with the evil doctor again, along with his new partner, Knuckles.

We also get to see some of the new locations and characters appearing in the movie. It looks like it will be an exciting ride, and we can’t wait to see what Sonic has in store for us. Are you excited about the release of Sonic the Hedgehog?

But for now, here’s everything we know about the upcoming movie.

Release Date

Sonic the Hedgehog 2 is slated to release on April 8, 2022. Production on the film began in March of last year, with director Jeff Fowler. He confirmed his return by posting a photo of his director’s chair on Twitter with the caption: “Lights, camera, hedgehog.”

Filming for the sequel ended in May 2021, and once again, director Fowler confirmed the news on Twitter.

Trailer

The movie’s first trailer was revealed at The Game Awards in December 2021. The footage showed Dr. Robotnik returning to earth in an egg-shaped ship. And he was accompanied by the beloved character Knuckles.

The trailer also showed Dr. Robotnik and Knuckles hatching a plan to steal the powers of Sonic. Paramount then unveiled a trailer for Sonic the Hedgehog 2 in the Super Bowl LVI, giving fans a first look at Knuckle and Sonic’s rivalry.

Toward the end of the second trailer, Knuckles is seen mocking Sonic, saying, “You’re unworthy, untrained, and unskilled.” Then, Sonic replied that Knuckles had forgotten one thing. “Unstoppable.”

Additionally, to tease the trailer’s release, Paramount Pictures previously released a Sonic speed trailer. Basically, the trailer was too fast to watch, exciting the fans even more.

And now on the final trailer. Sonic and Tails will fight against Dr. Robotnik and Knuckles for the Chaos Emeralds. This item appears to be the key to getting the ultimate power but can destroy civilizations.

The final trailer gives a brief taste of the Knuckles versus Sonic action. And this alone is enough to get fans pumped for the movie’s release.

Cast

The major stars from the first installment are returning for the sequel. Ben Schwartz is back as the voice of Sonic, and he had always been open about voicing the titular hedgehog for the second time.

In fact, in February 2021, Schwartz teased that he’d read the script for Sonic the Hedgehog 2 during an interview with ComicBook.com. He described it as awesome. Additionally, Tika Sumpter and James Marsden are confirmed to reprise their roles as Maddie and Tom Wachowski.

On the other hand, Jim Carry will return to play the evil Dr. Robotnik. Sources say that he was the first to suggest a sequel to director Jeff Fowler after the first movie’s success.

Natasha Rothwell and Adam Pally are returning as Rachel and Wade Whipple, respectively. Moreover, Tails will be voiced by a newcomer cast Colleen O’Shaughnessey. Finally, Idris Elba will also be joining the cast, voicing Knuckles.

With such a star-studded cast, it’s no wonder that the movie is already one of the most anticipated films of 2022.

Plot

With the final trailer release, the official plot synopsis for the sequel has now been unveiled. After saving the planet from Dr. Eggman’s nefarious deeds, Sonic is keen to prove that he has what it takes to be a true hero.

His test comes when Eggman launches a new scheme with Knuckles searching for a powerful emerald, said to be the source of the ultimate power. While Sonic sets off to foil Eggman’s plan, he is also joined by his friend Tails.

Together, the two embark on a journey to find the mystic emerald before Dr. Robotnik does. The appearance of Tails did not come as a surprise to many because the character briefly appeared in the post-credits scene of the first movie.

Also, the title font for Sonic the Hedgehog 2 heavily resembles the classic video game series and hinted at Tails involvement. The plot follows the events at the end of Sonic the Hedgehog, which saw Dr. Robotnik banished from earth and sent through a mushroom planet with Sonic’s quill in possession.

In the first film’s post-credits scene, Dr. Robotnik declares to be home by Christmas. From that, we can imagine Dr. Robotnik’s journey back to earth and what further chaos awaits Sonic and his friends.

Will There Be A Third Sonic the Hedgehog Film?

Even before the second movie gets released, Paramount has confirmed that a third Sonic the Hedgehog film is currently in development. Well, this is good news for Sonic fans.

Not only that, but a spin-off TV serious was also announced, focusing on Knuckles. The series will be distributed on Paramount Plus.

The CEO of Sega Corporation, Haruki Satomi, said they’re delighted to announce that the third movie and the first live-action series are actively developed. He also added that Sega and Paramount have an outstanding partnership, and they’re excited to expand the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise with them.

No further details about Sonic the Hedgehog 3 have been revealed, but it’s safe to say that fans are looking forward to seeing more. In the meantime, they can check out the trailer for the second movie.

Early Reactions

Since the release of the final trailer, the first reactions of fans about Sonic 2 have flooded on social media. Commentators and critics gave nothing but praise to Jim Carrey’s performance as Dr. Robotnik and the redesigns of both Sonic and Tails.

The most common praise was for the film’s updated designs, with many people calling them “sleek” and “modern.” The new look for Sonic, in particular, was singled out as a significant improvement over his design in the first movie. Other fans were happy to see that Tails finally got a redesign after being left out in the first film.

The trailer also seems to have won over some people who were initially skeptical about the sequel. Many fans who were worried about the direction of the film said that they are now much more excited about it after seeing the trailer.

Also, the addition of Idris Elba as Knuckles was praised by many as a great choice. According to many, the appearance of Tails and Knuckles makes the movie more faithful to the games.

Overall, fans seem to be very excited about Sonic the Hedgehog 2 and are eagerly awaiting its release. With such positive early reactions, it looks like the film is on track to be another success for Sega and Paramount.

Final Thoughts

“Sonic the Hedgehog” was a big success at the box office, so it’s no surprise that there would be a second movie in the works. While the first movie was lighthearted and fun, the sequel looks to be taking a more serious tone. The trailer introduces some new characters and teases a more action-packed story.

Indeed, it won’t be long before we see another “Sonic the Hedgehog” movie. And who knows, maybe Sonic will finally catch that pesky Dr. Eggman this time.
