Momoiro Clover Z Returns to Sing Theme Song for “Sailor Moon Eternal” 2-Part Anime Film

Posted in: Anime News

Popular Japanese girl group Momoiro Clover Z is back to sing Sailor Moon songs, as the official website for the franchise revealed this Monday that the group will be singing the theme songs for the upcoming Sailor Moon Eternal films! The announcement revealed that the group will be singing the movie’s main theme Tsukiiro Chainon (Moonlight Chainon) along with the main cast of the film.

A special preview video of the song, along with clips of Momoiro Clover Z recording the main theme, was also uploaded to Youtube. Watch the clip here!

Ardent followers of Sailor Moon (in particular its Crystal iteration) will be familiar with the group, as they sung Crystal season 1’s opening theme song MOON PRIDE. The single’s B-side, Gekkou (Moon Rainbow) was used as the 1st season’s ending theme. They also performed one of three versions of New Moon ni Koi Shite, the opening theme song of Crystal season 3. They also recorded their own version of classic Sailor Moon songs, Moonlight Densetsu and Tuxedo Mirage.

The Sailor Moon Eternal films will premiere in two instalments, with first scheduled to premiere on January 8, 2021. The second film is slated for a February 11, 2021 release.

Toei has previously announced that they will be co-producing the films with Studio DEEN. Chiaki Kon, who directed the third season of Sailor Moon Crystal (which critics deemed an improvement from the first two seasons) will be returning to direct the two films. Character design will be done by Kazuko Tadano, who is credited for the same role in the original anime. The script will be penned by JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure’s Kazuyuki Fudeyasu, with the manga’s author herself Naoko Takeuchi serving as supervisor to the movies.

The two-part film is part of Sailor Moon Crystal, the modern reiteration of the beloved anime classic. Unlike the 90s anime, Crystal adapted the entire manga’s story and also stayed closer to the manga’s art style. Three TV seasons were released so far for Crystal: the first centered on the Dark Kingdom arc from the manga, the second on the arrival of the Black Moon Clan and Chibiusa, and the third featured the Death Busters and the introduction of the Outer Senshi (Uranus, Neptune, Saturn, Pluto). The upcoming films are set to adapt the fourth arc of the manga, the “Dead Moon” arc.
