“The Promised Neverland” Illustrator Draws Characters Doing Social Distancing

Manga artists are stepping up in support of Japan’s Stay Home campaign, and the newest artist to participate in this endeavor is Posuka Demizu, illustrator of The Promised Neverland manga series! The series’ official Twitter account posted on Tuesday Demizu’s special illustration depicting the three main characters wearing face masks. The three are also shown observing some distance between each other i.e., social distancing—Ray is sitting comfortably underneath a tree while reading a book. Emma, meanwhile, is talking to Norman who is sick in bed by using a string telephone. Check out the illustration below!

The Emma and Norman scene above references an instance from the manga where the latter is sick and Emma uses a string telephone to talk to him.

The Promised Neverland is a manga series written by Kaiu Shirai and illustrated by Posuka Demizu, which is being serialized in Weekly Shonen Jump since August 2016. An anime adaptation of the series was first announced in 2018 and aired from January to March 2019 in Fuji TV’s late-night Noitamina anime block. The 12-episode anime series was animated by CloverWorks and directed by Mamoru Kanbe, with series composition by Toshiya Ono, character designs by Kazuaki Shimada, and music by Takahiro Obata. The premiere of the series’ second season has been moved from October to January 2021.

The Promised Neverland tells the story of orphan girl Emma, who grew up with her 37 other siblings in a place called the Grace Field House. They never want for anything, as they are provided with the best of everything. One day, Emma and her friend Norman follow Conny who is sent away to be adopted. When they have managed to sneak out, they find Conny dead and discover the horrific truth: that they are being raised for slaughter to be eaten by demonic creatures. Faced by this threat to all their lives, Emma, Norman and their friend Ray find a way to escape from their prison and save all of their siblings as well.

A live-action film was also announced for the series, with no definite released date announced.
