We’re all cooped up in our houses and are now running out of things to do, but thankfully the SOS Brigade (well actually just Haruhi and Kyon) is giving us something to keep ourselves busy with! Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya voice actors Aya Hirano (Haruhi) and Tomokazu Sugita (Kyon) posted videos of them last Sunday doing the iconic “Hare Hare Yukai” dance from their homes. Watch Aya’s video here and Tomokazu’s video here!
Both videos proved to be huge hits to fans, as Aya’s has already accumulated 8.4 million views while Tomokazu’s now has 3.9 million views! Wow.
Both videos also had the hashtag #お家で全力ハレ晴レユカイ (Do the “Hare Hare Yukai” With All Your Might at Home), encouraging their fans to re-awaken their mad skills to dance once more to the iconic anime anthem of 2006-2007—at home, of course.
So yes, it is time to recall the dance steps we all danced to in 2006 in anime conventions all over the world—or if you can’t recall them anymore, you can just follow Aya and Tomokazu’s dance steps.
Last June 2019, the entire SOS Brigade—Aya Hirano (Haruhi), Tomokazu Sugita (Kyon), Minori Chihara (Yuki Nagato), Yuko Goto (Mikuru Asahina), and Daisuke Ono (Itsuki Koizumi)—reunited on stage for the first time in 12 years during the Lantis Matsuri concert. The last time they were all complete on stage was at the “Suzumiya Haruhi no Gekisou (The Extravaganza of Haruhi Suzumiya)" live concert event on March 18, 2007.
Anime News Network describes The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya as such:
“On the first day of high school a beautiful girl named Haruhi Suzumiya introduces herself as having “no interest in ordinary humans”. She asks for any aliens, time travelers, sliders or espers to join her. Watching her weird behaviour is Kyon who sits in front of Haruhi and is the only person who talks to her. When Kyon comments about Haruhi’s joining every club in school and then quitting he unwittingly gives Haruhi an idea to start her own after school club. Thereafter Kyon and several others find themselves dragged, literally, into the Save our world by Overloading it with fun Suzumiya Haruhi’s Brigade (the S.O.S. Brigade for short).”
