Yuri!!! On ICE Co-Creator Mitsurou Kubo Shares That She’s Still Working on YoI Film From Home

Posted in: Anime News

Finally, a (small) update on this long-delayed film: Mitsurou Kubo, co-creator of the well-loved 2016 (gay) skating anime series Yuri!!! On ICE has recently revealed to her Instagram followers that she’s currently working on the Yuri!!! On ICE film from home.

She wrote on her Instagram account: "I’ve been living alone for a long time, and it’s been close to 25 years since I started drawing manga from home. And long, long before the recent self-isolation measures, I was at home working on #iceadolescence film. My burning desire to show this work to the world hasn’t changed, not even in these times. I want to work hard and move forward alongside you all, so that one day this film can be shown to you.

I’m not in a position to share details regarding the film’s progress on social media, so my personal Instagram is going to just be a Food-stagram from now on. This is my escape as an isolated person."

It was revealed in September of last year that the much-awaited Yuri!!! On ICE Movie: Ice Adolescence (Yuri!!! On ICE Gekijou-ban : Ice Adolescence) has been delayed from its 2019 opening (no specific month was announced). The production committee’s announcement stated that they plan to announce a new opening date once details have been smoothed out. They also stated that the reason for the postponement is “in order to substantially scale up the content more than originally planned.”

The movie was first announced in April 2017, during a special stage event. On January 2019, during a marathon event in Japan, it was revealed that Ice Adolescence will focus on 17-year old—and still sporting long silver locks—Viktor Nikiforov. It got fans really excited, because teenager Viktor! In his first ever Olympic season!! But alas, our fate is to wait. Let’s all just hope this will all be worth it.

Yuri!!! On ICE is an original anime series produced by MAPPA and directed and written by Sayo Yamamoto and original scripts written by Mitsurou Kubo. It aired from October to December 2016 with 12 episodes, and was arguably one of the most-talked about anime series during that season as well as garnering record BD sales in Japan that year. It also got the attention of international figure skaters, with some of them noting their likenesses to the characters or even performing routines from the show.
