First Three “Evangelion Rebuild” Films Released for Free on Youtube

Posted in: Anime News

A lot of anime franchises have recently been uploading their episodes or films on Youtube for free, and now you can add iconic series Evangelion to that list! Studio Khara has recently uploaded the three Evangelion Rebuild films on its official Youtube channel. Those films are Evangelion: 1.0 You Are [Not] Alone, Evangelion: 2.0 You Can [Not] Advance, and Evangelion: 3.0 You Can (Not) Redo. The films were uploaded on Youtube last Monday and on the Eva-Extra smartphone app last Saturday. The films will be available for free until April 30.

Note however, that there are no English subtitles—but if you’re just re-watching the films for the heck of it (like me), then there should be no problem. (Haha)

This is perhaps some sort of consolation to all Eva fans who no doubt were saddened by the delay for the fourth and final film of the Rebuild tetralogy, Evangelion: 3.0+1.0: Thrice Upon A Time (Shin Evangelion Gekijō-ban :||). The film, which was originally slated for a June 27 release in Japan, was announced to be “delayed indefinitely” due to concerns over COVID-19.

Besides uploading the three films, Studio Khara also said that they are currently working on releasing the audio commentaries as well, “so that you can enjoy yourselves even more now that you’ll be spending such a long time inside your homes.”

The first three Evangelion Rebuild films were released in 2007, 2009, and 2012 respectively.

Neon Genesis Evangelion is a mecha anime series produced by Gainax and Tatsunoko Production under the direction of Hideaki Anno. Since its release in 1995 the series has become a cult classic, receiving critical acclaim and being controversial alike with its deconstruction of the mecha genre as well as its different themes ranging from religion to psychology.

Anime News Network describes the TV series as such:

“At the age of 14 Shinji Ikari is summoned by his father to the city of Neo Tokyo-3 after several years of separation. There he unwillingly accepts the task of becoming the pilot of a giant robot by the name EVA01 and protect the world from the enigmatic invaders known as “angels.” Even though he repeatedly questions why he has accepted this mission from his estranged and cold father, his doing so helps him to gradually accept himself. However, why exactly are the angels attacking and what are his father’s true intentions are yet to be unraveled.”
