It’s still raining success for Makoto Shinkai’s latest film, as online film earnings aggregator Box Office Mojo estimates that the film has already made more than $7.2 million in North America! Weathering with You opened to 224 theaters in the US last January 31, but it already had held special screenings since January 15, where it earned over $1 million.

The film’s general release last January 31 was further propelled by 4DX screenings, which helped it earn over $100,000 during the first day alone. Totaling Weathering With You’s North American earnings (including the special screenings), the film has now raked in $7,273,408, higher than the earnings of the previous Shinkai film, Your Name.

Anime News Network describes the movie’s story as such:

In the film’s story, high school student Hodaka leaves his home on an isolated island and moves to Tokyo, but he immediately becomes broke. He lives his days in isolation, but finally finds a job as a writer for a shady occult magazine. After he starts his job, the weather has been rainy day after day. In a corner of the crowded and busy city, Hodaka meets a young woman named Hina. Due to certain circumstances, Hina and her younger brother live together, but have a cheerful and sturdy life. Hina also has a certain power: the power to stop the rain and clear the sky.

The film was released last July 19 2019 in Japan, with international screenings following soon after. Weathering with You also won the Best Animated Feature Film award at the 13th Asia Pacific Screen Awards (APSA) held in Brisbane, Australia. It competed against four films: Hiroyasu Ishida’s Penguin Highway, Kirby Atkins’ Mosley, Oh Sung Yoon’s Underdog, and Behzad Nalbandi’s The Unseen.
