Boys-love fans are indeed well-fed this year as we get another BL news: the live-action film adaptation of boys-love manga series Kyuuso wa Cheese no Yume o Miru (The Cornered Mouse Dreams of Cheese) has finally announced a release date! The movie is set for a June 5, 2020 theatrical release in Japan. This announcement comes after more than a year since the movie was first announced.
The movie is directed by Isao Yukisada (GO, River’s Edge), with Tadayoshi Okura of idol group Kanjani Eight cast in the role of Kyoichi Otomo. Ryo Narita is cast opposite him as Wataru Imagase.
The Cornered Mouse Dreams of Cheese was first released in 2005 and was serialized in Shogakukan’s Nighty JUDY. The series’ English license is held by Seven Seas Entertainment, with the first volume published just last November 2019. Seven Seas describes the series’ story as follows:
“When Otomo Kyoichi’s wife starts to suspect that her husband is cheating on her, she hires a private eye, Imagase, to investigate him. However, not only does Imagase know Kyoichi from college, but he’s been nursing a crush on the man for years. Imagase gives Kyoichi an ultimatum: if Kyoichi wants to keep his cheating ways under wraps, then he has to give Imagase something in return. Imagase’s demands start with a kiss, but as the two men become entangled in each other’s lives, it soon becomes clear they each might want more than the other can give.”
The series’ author Setona Mizushiro also shared her thoughts on Twitter on the upcoming release of the film:
“Five years have passed since I received a plan for the live-action adaptation, and a wonderful film has been completed. There are many unmissable moments by the wonderful actors, Tadayoshi Okura-san and Ryo Narita-san. The film is filled with many scenes, the ones from the manga and the newly-created ones for the film, which make you want to see again and again. It is the story of two volumes, but please feel the depth more than that at the theater.”
