The newest My Hero Academia film, Heroes Rising, has been showing in Japan for three weeks already and now it is time for the box office reports to come in. According to official figures, the second film in the ultra-popular franchise has earned a total of 1.1 billion yen since its December 20, 2019 release in Japan. Comparing it to the first movie Two Heroes, that number is only 89% of the latter’s three-week earnings.
If this pace continues, reports state that Heroes Rising might find it hard to surpass the 1.72 billion yen total domestic gross of Two Heroes.
This, however, does not immediately mean that My Hero Academia is slowly losing its luster to Japanese fans. It should be noted that Heroes Rising is competing with big Hollywood franchises such Star Wars: The Rise of the Skywalker and Frozen 2 in the Japanese box office, which could have then affected ticket sales for Heroes Rising. Either way, even if it’s set to earn lower than the first film, it still performed quite well against foreign franchises, coming in third at the box office for three weeks.
Funimation describes the film as such:
“Class 1-A visits Nabu Island where they finally get to do some real hero work. The place is so peaceful that it’s more like a vacation … until they’re attacked by a villain with an unfathomable Quirk! His power is eerily familiar, and it looks like Shigaraki had a hand in the plan. But with All Might retired and citizens’ lives on the line, there’s no time for questions. Deku and his friends are the next generation of heroes, and they’re the island’s only hope.”
Director Kenji Nagasaki and scriptwriter Yousuke Kuroda reprised their roles from both the first film and the TV series. Yoshihiko Umakoshi still handled character design and Yuuki Hayashi composed the film’s music. Creator Kohei Horikoshi is also on board as the general supervisor and original character designer for the Heroes: Rising movie. The movie is produced by BONES, who also handled My Hero Academia’s TV series and first movie.
