How to Prepare for Your First Cosplay Competition

Posted in: Anime News

Cosplay has undeniably one of the most popular hobbies in the world. It has become one of the popular mediums to express oneself and just so their love for the character that they love.

In some conventions, some have big and small cosplay competitions where cosplayers perform a skit and compete to win awesome prices. Some of these competitions may also be a gateway to represent your team or country to bigger cosplay competitions in other countries like the World Cosplay Summit.

Now before we aim high into that dream, let’s start with the basics. We all have our first time. So this week, we are going to share to how to prepare for your first cosplay competition.

Know The Character

The secret to a perfect cosplay contest entry is to know the character that you are cosplaying. Remember that cosplay is not just about wearing a costume. It’s also about being the character following their personality, their habits, and even memorizing their known catchphrases. Remember that knowing the character that you want to cosplay doesn’t take overnight. You need to have more time to know the character more. Watch the anime or play the video game. It’s not really good to pretend that you know the character but you honestly don’t know.

Know The Moves

Usually cosplay competitions are all about your performance on stage. Aside from knowing the character, you also have to know how they move. Make sure that the skit that you are performing is something that you are capable of doing. Do not push yourself to the limit because you might injure yourself on stage. Since this is still your first time in doing this, it doesn’t hurt to try out simple movements and actions first. Only advance when you finally get the hang of performing on stage.

Secure Your Costume

When we mean secure your costume, we mean that you have to make sure all the parts of your costume are perfectly placed and won’t detach while you’re doing your skit. Wardrobe malfunctions are inevitable so you must make an effort to make sure everything is glued and fastened so that such situations won’t happen.

If ever it happens, the show must go on. Keep going and just first your skit. Don’t forget to get the dropped part afterwards before you leave the stage.

Be Sure You Have Someone to Help You

No man is an island so make sure you have some assistants with you to help you set up your cosplay before the competition. They will also be there for you just in case something happens to you on stage.

On major cosplay competitions however, organizers might be strict on the number of people that you will be having with to assist in your cosplay. Be sure to check with the competition rules or ask one of the convention staff.

Don’t Forget to Have Fun

Although you are joining in a competition, don’t forget that at the end of the day, cosplay will remain a hobby that should be enjoyed to the fullest. Don’t forget to have fun. Cosplay is all about passion, friendship, and expressing yourself event if it’s just for few days.

Good luck and hope this has helped you get prepared to your next cosplay competition!
