‘Weathering With You’ Dominates Japan Box Office Earning 1.64 Billion Yen in 1st 3 Days

Makoto Shinkai’s new filmed titled Weathering With You dominated the Japanese box office in its first three days alone. The film has sold around 1,159,020 tickets earning a gross of 1,645,809,400 yen (US$15.22 million). This highly-anticipated film opened on Friday, July 19 in 448 screens in 359 theaters.

Compared to Shinkai’s previous hit your name., this latest film grossed 28.6% higher. The film will be screened worldwide with confirmed dates already set for South America, Asia, Europe, and North America.

Weathering With You stars Nana Mori as Hina Amano and Kotaro Daigo as Hodaka Morishima. Other confirmed cast in the film are the following:

Tsubasa Honda as Natsumi
Chieko Baisho as Tomi
Sakura Kiryu as Nagisa Amano
Sei Hiraizumi as Yasui

Here is a Synopsis of the film as described by GKIDS:

The summer of his high school freshman year, Hodaka runs away from his remote island home to Tokyo, and quickly finds himself pushed to his financial and personal limits. The weather is unusually gloomy and rainy every day, as if to suggest his future. He lives his days in isolation, but finally finds work as a writer for a mysterious occult magazine. Then one day, Hodaka meets Hina on a busy street corner. This bright and strong­willed girl possesses a strange and wonderful ability: the power to stop the rain and clear the sky…

Aside from this film, Makoto Shinkai has also created a novel adaptation of the film which was released in July 18 in both print and digital formats. A manga adaptation is slated to be released in Afternoon magazine on July 25. The soundtrack of the film was released in Japan on July 19.
