“Sonic the Hedgehog” Producer Tim Miller Confident that Sonic’s Redesign Will Please Fans

Posted in: Anime News

Just last May, the internet banded together against one common enemy: the new (Hollywood) design of beloved video game character Sonic the Hedgehog. When the first trailer and look for the upcoming Hollywood live-action adaptation of Sonic came out, most of the internet agreed that the new design—which has Sonic sporting human teeth and gloveless hands (among others)—basically sucked. A few weeks later, we got the news that Paramount has bowed to pressure from fans and has decided to delay the release of the movie to adjust the character’s design.

Now, we get some more news for the (dreaded) live-action film by way of a sit-down interview with Sonic producer Tim Miller. In the interview with Variety, Miller says that he agrees with fans’ opinions on Sonic’s design and had no qualms about delaying the release just to please them. “Look, I was with fans and so was Jeff (Fowler, director of the Sonic film). When the s–t hit the fan, I went over there and said, “The most important thing to do, man, is say, ‘I f–ked up.’”

He also praised Fowler for the latter’s quick uptake on the feedback from fans: “He’d already sent a tweet out an hour before I got there. He’s a good man. It was exactly the right way to handle that. The fans have a voice in this too. There’s a right way to listen.”

When asked about the new design, Miller was confident that their delay of the film to 2020 will pay off, saying, “I think the fans will be pleased.”

Sonic the Hedgehog is directed by Jeff Fowler, with Neal Moritz (of Fast & Furious franchise) producing the film along with Tim Miller (Deadpool), Toby Ascher, Dmitri Johnson and Dan Jevons. The film stars Ben Schwartz as the voice of Sonic, James Marsden as cop Tom Wachowski, and Jim Carrey as Dr. Robotnik. The film will be released on February 2020.
