There’s manga that leaves you all light and fuzzy and happy, that when a final chapter is announced you just want to bawl your eyes out because you don’t want it to end. On the other hand, there is the kind of manga that you secretly enjoy and keep it as such because liking this kind of manga might call your character into question? And when the end is announced, you’re not sure if you’re going to celebrate because finally this guilty pleasure will expose me no longer, but then you’re also sad because such a great story is going to end!
Perhaps this is how fans of Happy Sugar Life will feel (okay, dang it, I’m a fan), as the twisted thriller manga is set to draw to a close. The June issue of Square Enix’s Gangan Joker magazine has announced that the manga will be releasing its last chapter on June 22. To commemorate its finale, Gangan Joker will be featuring Happy Sugar Life in its cover, along with a full-color first page. The manga’s ninth and tenth volumes will be shipped on July 22.
Happy Sugar Life is written and illustrated by Tomiyaki Kagisora. The manga was first serialized in Square Enix’s Gangan Joker magazine since May 2015. Its story centers on highschooler Matsuzaka Satou, a girl who maintains a cheerful, sweet façade but hides a twisted depravity to her character because of the physical & psychological abuse she suffered as a child. She initially does not care about boys and love, but all that changed when she met an innocent little girl named Shio. Entranced and immediately falling in love with Shio’s innocence, she kidnaps the child and keeps her in her apartment. While she showers Shio with love and care—which the child reciprocates—Satou does everything in her power, including murder, to hide Shio from the public and keep their “happy sugar life” a secret.
It’s interesting to watch out how the manga will end, as the anime has essentially gotten ahead of the manga. In fact, one could say that the anime has somewhat spoiled the manga, but we have yet to see if the manga will follow the anime’s tragic end. Till then, we’ll have to wait and see on how the manga will turn out.
