First Trailer Released for Sonic the Hedgehog Live-Action Film

In today’s “things that the Internet is expressing collective fright on”: Paramount Pictures has just released a trailer for the much-talked about Sonic the Hedgehog live-action film. I’d describe it to you, but I think it’d be best if you watch it for yourself:

The internet is having a field day on the trailer, pointing out Sonic’s (downright horrifying) human teeth, his gloveless hands (because apparently, he has white hands!) and the trailer’s “Gangsta’s Paradise” soundtrack—which totally reminds us of Sonic, sarcasm implied.

The trailer doesn’t show much plot details, but the gist appears to be Sonic befriending a cop (played by former XMen actor James Marsden), with Sonic telling the cop that “Basically, it looks like I’m gonna have to save your planet” (so where does Sonic come from?). They then team up to defeat Dr. Robotnik, who is played by Jim Carrey (channeling all of his past roles). Ben Schwartz of Parks and Recreation fame voices titular character Sonic.

Last March, advertising agency Hamagami/Caroll, Inc. gave a sneak preview of Sonic’s character design for the upcoming film. As early as that time the internet hated the design—and so did Sonic creator himself, Yuji Naka. Translated by Kotaku, Naka’s tweets reads as such:

“I feel like, with this Sonic here, visually, the important thing to look at is the head and body ratio and the roundness of the abdomen. I wonder if they couldn’t have balanced them a little bit better…These images of Sonic aren’t coming officially from the movie-making source; I think it’s possible they’re being strategically leaked, though getting people talking about it ‘because it’s bad’ can’t be good for Sonic’s existing. Well, there’s also the possibility that this is fan-made, though even so, I’d still prefer it if they’d put some gloves on him. Seeing him bare-handed is quite a shock.”

(Yes, he entertained the thought that the designs were fan-made! That’s how shocked he was.)

The live-action film is directed by Jeff Fowler, with Neal Moritz (of Fast & Furious franchise) producing the film along with Tim Miller (Deadpool), Toby Ascher, Dmitri Johnson and Dan Jevons. Paramount Pictures has announced that the film will be released on November 8, 2019 in the US. Its opening date in Japan is yet to be announced.
