Gundam x Hello Kitty is the Collab We Never Knew We Needed

Posted in: Anime News

No one ever thought this day would come, because it was just so impossible and unimaginable… but here we are. Just yesterday, the unusual collaboration between Gundam and Hello Kitty—arguably two of the biggest pop culture franchises of Japan—was announced by way of a (baffling) PV, which you can watch below.

(EDIT: The original PV was taken down, but you can view the reuploaded video here.)

Now my Japanese is very limited, but from what I can understand from the PV is that Haro suddenly appears in Hello Kitty’s TV while the latter is preparing tea. Haro exclaims that Amuro Ray needs help, and proceeds to show him on Hello Kitty’s TV in his RX-78-2 Gundam battling several Zakus. Seeing Amuro fighting alone (Amuro says something in Japanese which regrettably, yours truly cannot understand ╥﹏╥ ) somehow moves Hello Kitty, so she runs off to help him. The next scene then takes us back to Amuro (the sequence here is actually the One-Year War Conflict with all-new animation) continuing to fight, when suddenly he gets distracted by a ray of light… and Hello Kitty, in supersized form, appears in front of Amuro.

This surprising collaboration is a celebration of the 40th anniversary of Mobile Suit Gundam and Hello Kitty’s 45th year. There are not much details made available yet but there has been an announced LINE campaign where fans can get to win prizes, a “real mystery solving game” by SCRAP, and collaborations with restaurants and retail stores as well.
