New Protagonist for Sega’s Yakuza Game Series Announced, New PS4 Game in the Works

Posted in: Anime News

With Kazuma Kiryu’s story ending in Yakuza 6: The Song of Life, most fans thought that this signaled the end of the series. Sega, however, appears to still have lots of plans with its hit beat-‘em-up game franchise, as evidenced by the 2018 launch of Yakuza Online for PC and mobile devices. Now we get more announcement regarding the future of the Yakuza series, as Sega has just announced that a new PS4 game is in the works!

Besides confirming a new PS4 game for the series, the official Yakuza website has also announced that the series’ next main protagonist will be Ichiban Kasuga. Kasuga, who was first introduced in the Yakuza Online, is a former member of the Tojo clan’s Arakawa family. After spending 17 years in prison for a crime he did not commit, he returns to the streets of Tokyo to take back control of the city from the Omi Alliance.

The website also announced open auditions for voice actresses who are interested to play the role of an unnamed female lead described as “main character level” and a friend of new protagonist Kasuga. Besides voicing the female lead, the chosen voice actress will also take part in the promotions for the upcoming game and will receive 1 million yen cash prize.

Yakuza, known as Ryu ga Gotoku (Like a Dragon) in Japan, was first released to Japanese players in 2005 by Sega. It became a commercial and critical success both in Japan and overseas, and has released several successful iterations and spin-offs since then.
