With the new season, there are two new characters introduced. Tomoaki Maeno and Yuuki Kaji will be reprising their roles as Haruitsuki Abeno and Hanae Ashiya respectively.

The first season of “The Morose Mononokean” anime premiered in June 2016 and had a total of 13 episodes. The staff that worked on the production include:

Director: Akira Iwanaga
Series Composition: Takao Yoshioka
Music: Yasuharu Takanashi
Original creator: Kiri Wazawa
Character Design: Atsuko Kageyama
Art Director: Tomohiro Ono
Sound Director: Hiroto Morishita

The story of the series takes focus on Hanae Ashiya, a young man who had a less than stellar beginning to his high school career given how he had ended up in the infirmary for the whole first week of school. Even after leaving the infirmary, his condition seems to worsen. What he is unaware of is that his condition is due to a youkai. One day he comes across a flyer advertising an exorcist who expels youkai and with nothing left to lose, he calls the number and is led to the Mononokean, a tea room which suddenly appears next to the infirmary.

He meets Haruitsuki Abeno who reluctantly helps him but demands payment afterward. After he helps him though, Hanae finds that he cannot afford the fee and must become an employee at the Mononokean to work off his debt. In addition to this, he finds that Abeno is, in fact, his classmate. Thus begins their journey together as they guide a variety of dangerous, strange, and interesting youkai back to the Underworld.
