What We See so Far - "Fukukai na Boku no Subete o"

Posted in: Anime News

Synopsis

Tetsu Iwaoka is a high school boy who notices that his classmate Mogumu is always alone at school. Deciding to help them by giving them a chance to make friends, he invites Mogomu to at his family’s maid cafe. Initially, Mogumo is excited at the prospect. However, upon discovering that the cafe is a girly boy cafe, Mogomu find themselves conflicted as they adamant about being neither a boy nor a girl.

The Good

The concept of a non-binary character is something that has been barely touched upon in both anime and manga. To have them not only as the main character but have a story that explores their perspectives and troubles is an interesting change of pace. What makes the series even more interesting is how it presented its story and characters. From how they all have their own stories to how they don’t necessarily fall under the same fold; there’s a lot of potential for them in terms of development in future chapters. Art-wise, it’s fun to see so many androgynous characters and how different yet fittings their looks can be as either gender.

The Bad

So far, the only real issue with the series lies in its pacing. It’s clear that it wants to expand as much as possible on certain aspects such as the characters learning to understand one another to them dealing with a certain issue. However, it results in the story coming off as rather stretched out and slows down the flow of the story. Meaning, it lingers a touch too long on certain things when it could have expanded a bit more on other aspects such as on Tetsu as a character. It may be considered as a nitpick but it is the one thing that stood out with the series.

Conclusion

The story is basically saying, “this is a character who knows who they are but not everyone understands, and that’s ok because they’re learning.” It’s unique, it’s different and it’s not too in your face. The only real thing that could be said against it is that it could work on it’s pacing and it tends to drag out certain points of the plot which ends up slowing down the overall flow of the story. Overall, it’s a story with a huge amount of potential, a few flaws but something that is definitely worth reading and following.
