General Impression: Jashin-chan Dropkick

Posted in: Anime News

Synopsis

This is the story of a delusional gothic lolita, Yurine and a demon girl with the tail of a cobra, Jashin-chan. After Jashin-chan ends up being summoned by Yurine, she finds herself tied to the girl and unable to return to hell. Upon discovering that she can return with the death of her summoner, Jashin-chan plots every way she can to end Yurine. Thus begins the duo’s slapstick comedy life of living together.

First Impression

Morbidly cute may seem like a strange description but it’s rather fitting to what the episode presented. It gave all of these adorable characters with quirky personalities and then it went in hand with some surprisingly gruesome gore. One moment these cute girls are having a meal together and then the next, the demon girl is being chopped for stealing all the meat and her snake tail is used to replace what was taken. It ’s safe to say there was a bit of a whiplash given. And the way that the episode was paced didn’t help things. Basically, the cuteness that somehow worked in hand with gore and was basically dumped on the viewer with little storytelling.

General Impression

While there is gore, the level of it works well with the general vibe of the series. The series for sure gives a wild ride and gave more than the expected comedy. There was quite an interesting mix of the concept of angels and demons. From how there are different types and levels to the way their powers work, the series certainly twisted things around with its supernatural aspect. Character-wise, there were some good points of character development here and there. However, plot-wise, there didn’t seem to be much of a direction or flow to be found with the series. Sure enough, as a comedy, it’s expected but personally, the series got a little too chaotic at times. Still, Yurine did well enough as a sort of counterbalance for some episodes and when compared to other comedy/parody series, this was not half bad.

Conclusion

A comedy series involving angels, demons and some violent gore here and there. Given the premise and general idea, it was expected that there would be chaos and a wild ride. It does, however, give an interesting and different look in terms of its supernatural aspect. While there is no solid plot there is a good amount of character development here and there and Yurine does act as a good character to balance out the chaos for the most part. It’s a series that may seem all over the place but does have its interesting points.
