Gintama 2 Falls to #5 in Japanese Box Office while Hibiki Opens at #6

Upon reaching its fifth week, the “Gintama 2: Okite wa Yaburu Tame ni Koso Aru” (The Law is Surely There to be Broken), the second live-action film has dropped down to #5. During this week, the film has earned a total of 145,515,800 yen (about US$1.29 million) from Friday to Sunday.

The second live-action film of the “Gintama” franchise had made its debut on August 17. It was shown on 345 theaters and had earned the #1 spot after earning over 800 million yen (about US$7.27 million). The film was directed and written by Yuuichi Fukuda who worked on the first live-action show. The story of the film covered both the “Shinsengumi Crisis” and the “Shogun Reception” arcs, the latter of which features the introduction of the Shogun.

For the main cast of the film, it included:

Shun Oguri as Gintoki Sakata
Masaki Suda as Shinpachi Shimura
Kanna Hashimoto as Kagura
Masami Nagasawa as Tae Shimura
Masaki Okada as Kotarō Katsura
The live-action film “Hibiki: Shōsetsuka ni Naru Hōhō”/“Hibiki: How to Become a Novelist” on the other hand has just been released in 296 theaters and has earned 111,695,200 yen (about US$992,300) from Friday to Sunday. With this result, the film has landed itself in the #6 spot of the box office.

Based on the manga by Mitsuharu Yanamoto, the film tells a tale that begins with a handwritten novel manuscript being thrown away for not meeting the conditions of a rookie contest. The discarded manuscript, however, ends up being picked up by an editor named Hanai and he ends up believing it to be a revolutionary novel. With only the author’s name, Hibiki Akui, as a clue, he begins his search. Said author though, is, in fact, a 15-year-old student who has joined her school’s literary club, unaware that she is being tracked down.

The film is directed by Shō Tsukikawa who worked on the live-action work of “Kurosaki-kun no Iinari ni Nante Naranai.” And is written by Masafumi Nishida, the series composer of the “Tiger and Bunny” series.

On another note, the live-action film adaptation of Daruma Matsuura’s “Kasane” manga dropped off the Top 10 in its second weekend while the “Real Girl”/“3D Kanojo” live-action film made its debut but wasn’t able to make the list.
