Sega Delays the Release of ‘Mega Drive Mini’ Console to 2019, Plans for Global Release

Posted in: Anime News

It was announced on Wednesday by Sega that the release of its upcoming console (which was slated for this year) tentatively named as “Mega Drive Mini” will be delayed. They have also announced that they will release the console globally.

The Mega Drive is Sega’s third console and was released in Japan in 1989. They also release the console in the same year in North America under the name Sega Genesis. Production for the console halted in 2001.

The original version of this console was named as Sega Genesis in North America while it is named as Sega Mega Drive in Europe.

“Memorable famous games” originally released on the Sega Mega Drive will be featured in this upcoming console. Sega-Sammy Holdings Inc.’s President and CEO Haruki Satomi said that the “Mega Drive Mini” will be different from an “overseas version” that is now on sale.

A Sega Genesis Flashback console was released by AtGames last year which had 85 built-in games, with a majority of these were ports not originally release on the Sega Genesis. This console was released for several countries.
