Anime Film ‘I Want to Eat Your Pancreas’ Conquers Opening Week Earning 100 Million Yen!

The anime film I Want to Eat Your Pancreas premiered on Saturday and Sunday in Japan conquering the box office earning around 100 million yen (US$960,000). It ranked #10 on its opening weekend with around 87, 206 tickets sold.

Some theaters were giving away the sequel novel of the original I Want to Eat Your Pancreas novel titled Chichi no Tsuioku no Dareka ni Chichi to Tsuioku no Dareka ni (To My Father and to Someone in My Memories).

Aniplex of America confirmed that they will be screening the film in US theaters. A preview screening of the film happened on July 24 in Tokyo.

Mahiro Takasugi and Lynn will respectively be playing the roles of the unnamed male protagonist and female character Sakura Yamauchi. Other cast members include Yukiyo Fujii as Kyōko, Yūma Uchida as Takahiro, Jun Fukushima as Gum-kun, Atsuko Tanaka as the protagonist’s mother, and Shinichiro Miki as the protagonist’s father.

Let Me Eat Your Pancreas is narrated in an unnamed protagonist’s point of view when he founds a diary in the hospital one day which belonged to his classmate named Sakura Yamauchi. Yamauchi is suffering from a terminal illness in her pancreas and is only given a few months to live. It was only the unnamed protagonist that knows about her conditional aside from her family.

Despite obvious differences, the protagonist promises to keep Sakura’s illness a secret and decided to be with her in the last few months of her life.
