Stylish and Interesting but Ultimately What's Expected: Film Girl

Synopsis

Nakamura Mei is a simple high school girl who blends a little too easily in the background. One day while at a cafe with friends, she ends up bumping into the table of a popular model named Shirou. Upon seeing her face, the model has an unexpected reaction to her. He grabs her and takes her outside to reveal that not only is he her fan from when she was once a kid model, but he’s her idol-otaku?!

The Good

Usually, when the romance in a shoujo doesn’t present as it should, the colorfulness of the characters and the uniqueness of the story make up for it. Here, there are fun characters and an interesting story, but the way that the characters and their relationship developed really made the story. It showed the beauty of a pair drawing strength from the other and not be overly dependent and rather develop into their own person. What’s more, it stepped away from the craziness that could occur. Other than this, the style and the way it features the characters makes for some lovely visuals.

The Bad

As lovely as the style and development are, the series holds a pretty rather general tone overall. The characters in terms of personality don’t really stand out much. They’re cute and they have their moments sure, but they don’t really seem all that different from what you’d expect. Then there are the cliche conflicts in different chapters. When it involves a theme that touches on the entertainment business, there’s some craziness to be expected. It’s a rather low scale here but the whole antagonistic rival and the disapproving parent are no surprise.

Conclusion

Honestly, the title pretty much summarizes what one would find in the series. It’s biggest saving grace was that it gave something different from the usual in terms of development and ending. The whole shy female lead and earnest and quirky male lead are rather cute but for the most part, they are rather typical with just a dash of uniqueness to get the story going. Overall, it’s a story that doesn’t focus on the romance of the pair but did give some cute characters with an expected but somewhat different story flow.
