Synopsis
Arsène Lupin III is known as the grandson of the fictional gentleman thief, Arsène Lupin, and is considered the world’s greatest thief. The thief is mainly known for announcing his intentions to steal valuable objects by sending a calling card to the owners of his desired items. For this series, it is set in modern France and has the renowned thief enter the world of the internet and modern technology.
The Good
For someone who is not familiar with the previous adaptations or history of “Lupin the Third”, this is a great introduction to both the title character and general concept of the series. The art and animation are smooth, and most of all the story easily engages you from the start. Still, like with its previous adaptations, the action scenes are what truly stand out with the episodes. That and the mystery also helps.
Simply put, the series is an engaging mystery work with some great action. It does well in updating itself and introducing new characters. It brings a great balance of the old and new and presented a great look for the classic series. Honestly, this writer is not that highly familiar with the “Lupin the Third” franchise but the character himself is highly entertaining and the series sparked a great interest for his story.
If not for the characters then the mystery may just take you in with how it ties the story together. Really, with just three episodes, you get introduced to this interesting world of action and mystery.
The Bad
The most notable thing to say against the series in three episodes would be that it could have given more breathing room. There are moments where they sit around and plan yes, but it just seems that as a viewer, we weren’t given enough room to really digest everything that happened before the characters move to the next phase of things. On a more minor note, a little more variation on the action would have been nice as well.
Conclusion
The series is pretty much a classic type of action mystery with an updated twist. It presents a great art and animation along with a solid plot. The action scenes were a fun ride and the story was well established but a little more breathing room to take everything in before another action scene would be nice. The way that the characters bounce off one another makes up for things though and really, the flaws are rather minor.
