Synopsis
Set during the Taisho period, this is the tale of a simple duo turned unexpected trio. First, there was the all-girls school teacher Shougo and the black cat Kuroi-san. Now, due to his nephew, there is the straight-laced teacher, a black cat and a tight-lipped female servant who doesn’t talk. Thus, begins the curious tale of a new daily life between a man, a woman, and a black cat.
The Good
There are more than one or two manga series that tackles a story being told or featuring a cat’s perspective. Usually, it’s on them forming a bond with a human or it’s comedic peek at their perspective of things. To have a feline character basically be the middle character who roots and connects the main characters makes for the highlight of the series. How Kuroi cares or Tsuyu and basically ensures that Shougo is aware of things and such is adorable.
It’s also nice to see the subtle development between the characters without overly romantic overtones. Sure, there is a tone of romance that you can see develop, but it’s a soft and subtle type that you can appreciate. Honestly, it doesn’t really seem to be a romantic type of bond, more like a bond of closeness that shouldn’t really be defined if that makes sense. Simply put, the human characters and how they connect in the series so far adds as another point of interest.
The Bad
There are not necessarily bad points to the series rather than points that may not appeal to everybody. This is a rather low key series that mainly has the interest of a cat’s perspective going for it. For the most part, the characters are rather typical to their roles and the overall story is a rather low key and typical slice-of-life work. It’s the type of series that you read to pass the time or have a breather, to be honest.
Conclusion
There’s just something fun about stories that tackle the perspective of a cat. Just seeing how the characters connect is a because of this little black cat makes it even sweeter. Sure, there is a lot of typical notes with the story and characters, but you can appreciate its charm. It may not seem all that much, but it’s a charming series in its own way. And even if you may not get hooked on the slice-of-life aspect. The whole cat perspective and shenanigans make for a good laugh or two.
