The main cast for the upcoming “Hi Score Girl” anime adaptation has been confirmed. Announced in the July issue of Square Enix’s Monthly Big Gangan magazine, there are three main characters confirmed.

Playing the role of Haruo Yaguchi is Kōhei Amasaki, who will be joining the cast of “Black Clover” as Neige. Voicing the role of Akira Ōno will be Sayumi Suzushiro. As for the role of Koharu Hidaka, Yūki Hirose, the voice behind Noriko Yamada in fantasy series “Alice & Zoroku”

The story of “Hi Score Girl” sets in the year 1991, a time where 2D fighting games were a popular thing. Starring in this tale is Haruo, a six-grader who immerses himself at an arcade in the seedy part of town. While spending a usual day at the arcade, he encounters Akira. On the outside, Akira seems like a pretty girl with good grades and money.

The truth, however, is that she’s a top-class gamer. Going against her, Haruo finds himself completely outmatched as he is defeated round after round in a game of “Street Fighter II”. This results in the two forming a rather unlikely relationship.

The staff working on the production are as follows:

Director: Yoshiki Yamakawa
Series Composition: Tatsuhiko Urahata
Music: Yoko Shimomura
Original creator: Rensuke Oshikiri
Character Design: Michiru Kuwabata
Art Director: Akira Suzuki
Sound Director: Jin Aketagawa
Cgi Director: Yusuke Suzuki
Director of Photography: Shingo Fukuyo

“Hi Score Girl” is based on the manga written and illustrated by Rensuke Oshikiri. Serialized in Monthy Big Gangan from 2010 to now, there are currently seven volumes for the manga. The series has gained recognition for its unique art style, and thoroughly accurate depictions of the multitude of gaming software, hardware, and even culture that are featured.

It was in March 2018 that the anime adaptation was announced for the series. However, in August 2014, SNK Playmore (now SNK) filed a criminal complaint against Square Enix. It asserted that the Hi Score Girl manga features over 100 instances of characters from The King of Fighters, Samurai Spirits (Samurai Shodown), and other fighting games owned by SNK.

A counterclaim was filed by Square Enix against SNK Playmore in October 2014. By August 2015 the two companies managed to settle their claims over the manga and SNK Playmore dropped its criminal charges against Square Enix.
