Unexpectedly Cute: "Monku no Tsukeyou ga Nai Love Comedy"

Posted in: Anime News

Synopsis

Kirishima Yuuki is a high school student who has been offered as a “living sacrifice” for a god, Kanaruzawa Sekai. Known as “The God Who Lived A Thousand Years”, she is a beautiful girl with silver hair and red eyes. Her appearance, however, does not match her personality as she is rather pompous and does not know much about her surroundings. And despite appearing young she can tolerate alcohol and tobacco and spends her day in her mansion reading books.

As Kirishima presents himself, she informs him that she’d grant him one thing in exchange for being the sacrifice. His response? Requesting her to marry him. And thus, begins the two’s life together in a tale of comedy romance. However, there may be more to this tale than it seems.

The Good

First off, Kirishima and Kanaruzawa make for an interesting pair. More than this, they make for interesting characters, and not just because they’re both unfamiliar with being in a relationship. With Kirishima, it’s because he is somehow a typical male character yet not at the same time. The former is mainly in how his dynamic is with Kanaruzawa while the latter is more on how he deals with their relationship and other characters.

Kanaruzawa, on the other hand, is interesting in how she deals with Kirishima, other things and the depth that we get a glimpse on. Outside of how interesting the characters and their dynamic, the first half of the series was rather strong.

The Bad

Personally, the comedy of the series didn’t do all that much for this writer. It felt wacky, overdone and basically set off the nice pace that the first half had established. Honestly, it would have been nice to have just seen the story focus more on the two rather than the wackiness that Kirishima’s classmate and sister brings. Really, it’s mainly due to Kirishima’s sister that a lot of things went down for this series. The extra brother complex sister? Just no, please.

Conclusion

For the first half of the series, there was some rather sweet development between the main characters. They have rather interesting personalities and bounce off the other rather well. And then in comes Kirishima’s sister. Again, the whole wacky humor with her and Kirishima’s classmate was just not for this writer. When compared with the first part, it just seems off. Still, the series is worth checking out a chapter or two.
