A Quick, Comedic but Sweet Tale: Omamorishimasu, Dokomademo

Synopsis

Luck is not Akira’s side as he finds once he arrives in Tokyo. Not only does he find that the company he just got accepted into disappearing but his housing has also gone down the drain as well. With no job and no housing, Akira finds his city life ending before it even began. Not all hope is lost, however, as who should text him than his childhood friend Chihiro.

Now he finds himself living with Chihiro and is provided a roof over his head, food, and even allowance. A rather confusing thing given that the two hadn’t seen each other since they were children. Add that with mysterious men in suits and kidnapping attempt, there is clearly more to Chihiro than he is willing to admit.

The Good

With just a short amount of chapters, the manga was able to present a rather concrete story. There was an even balance of story, romance, and development, the latter being the most prominent of the three. It was a clever thing to have Akira and Chihiro’s romance be connected to Akira growing to care for Chihiro with his job as his bodyguard. And it’s not just Chihiro and Akira who make for interesting characters, Chihiro’s family and other bodyguards make for interesting characters as well in how they affect Akira.

Just the way that the story has everything tied together then finished in a nice little bow made the series a satisfying read for the most part.

The Bad

The main issue with the series is that, with how short it is, there is a tendency for rushed parts and holes popping up. First, there is the whole emotional development on Akira’s part. While the relationship as a whole was done well, but the way that Akira flip-flopped through his emotions after vowing to protect Chihiro is a little frustrating, to say the least. Then there is the drama… it’s pretty cliche with the whole heir to a business and rich child thing. Like, it would have been nice to see at least an extra chapter without all the negativity that the series has shown.

Conclusion

As frustrating and dramatic as the story can get, it’s still cute in different ways. The different personalities of the characters and how they interact with one another, even the minor ones, make for a fun read. And as short as the story was, there was a good story to be found with a neat ending at least. What’s more, it doesn’t get too cliche or steamy, so if you’re looking for a funny but cute love story between two guys, this is one to check out.
