Ending Thoughts: Death March kara Hajimaru Isekai Kyousoukyoku

Posted in: Anime News

Synopsis

This is the story of Suzuki Ichirou, a 29-year-old programmer who suddenly wakes up transported into a fantasy RPG as a 15-year-old named Satou. While thinking he is dreaming, he finds himself swarmed by lizard men and uses a 3-time-use special power (meteor shower) which results in him becoming a very high level.

Deciding to hide his level, he travels to civilization in hopes of meeting new people and finding a way to “wake up.” On the way, he ends up saving a young woman from a wyvern and thus begins a tale of a once regular man ending up in a fantasy realm

General Impression

As the series progressed, the biggest point that stood out was the worldbuilding. With the unique aspect of the character having a gamer screen, the series takes a different turn in the worldbuilding through the character learning to adapt to different scenarios rather than have it as a background point. What’s more, when it comes to the protagonist, the story usually has them being strong but still developing their skills and becoming the hero. Here, the character already has control of powerful abilities, so instead we see more of him learning more on the fantasy realm and strategizing what best to do.

The problem with the series however, lies with the hero’s harem. This concept isn’t new, it’s been done many, many times before, but with this series, that concept takes a rather… cringe worthy to say the least. In the beginning it seemed like Ichirou would be keeping the slaves as a pseudo family or such. And them in came the nude scene and for this writer, the rest of the series pretty much went down the drain.

It is not to say that the series became terrible, it’s strong points still hold true and the action scenes were well done along with the magic sequence and strategy build. However, there are moments involving the girls that be rather off and it doesn’t help that majority of them are lolis. What’s more, while the build-up is great, there doesn’t seem to be a solid plot that the series is following outside of exploring the fantasy realm. Basically, great concept, setup but a lot of cringe worthy scenes and not much plot line.

Ending Thoughts

To put it simply, the final episode seemed more like a part of another arc rather than a conclusion to a series. There was no climax nor was anything new added for the conclusion. The ending segment of the episode however was rather nice with the action scene and had some interesting points introduced from the secondary characters. Other than that, the protagonist still held strong but the conflict that was in the episode is somewhat overdone. Simply put, the episode had its moments but overall had nothing new or anything to tie everything together.

Conclusion

The series had a rather strong start to it with a well-established foundation for not only the protagonist but the world he ends up in as well. From action scenes, to magic concepts and the overall designs are rather eye-catching. As stated before, the worldbuilding of the series is done highly well and with the way that Ichirou handles things with his gaming knowledge and tool brings a different perspective to the isekai genre. The downside of the series however is that there isn’t much of a solid plotline and the harem trope can be slightly off at times.
