‘Touken Ranbu’ Gets First 1st Live-Action Film Slated for 2019

From just a simple browser and mobile game, there’s seem to be no stopping the Touken Ranbu franchise. A live-action film project is officially green-lit and will open in Japan theaters on 2019.

The film will be directed by Saiji Yakumo (who directed Mars live-action) with script written by Yasuko Kobayashi (JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure, Kagegurui, and Attack on Titan).

In its cast members, five from the Touken Ranbu stage plays will be reprising their roles like Hiroki Suzuki as Mikazuki Munechika, Yoshihiro Aramaki as Yamanbagiri Kunihiro, Shiina as Fudou Yukimitsu, Ryō Kitamura as Yagen Toushirou, and Masanari Wada as Heshikiri Hasebe. Joining them in the movie will be Hiroaki Iwanaga (Berserk anime’s Guts) as Nihongou, Fūma Sadamoto as Honebami Toushirou, Taizō, and Tomoki Hirose as Uguisu Maru.

Just to give you guys a little background, the film is based from a popular Japanese browser and mobile game Touken Ranbu by DMM Games and Nitroplus. A Player who registers and plays the game is given the role as saniwa whose mission is to create and obtain swords, train them, and cleanse out the evils in are plaguing the world. It is personification of known historical Japanese swords into handsome men that got this franchise to be so popular until this day.

The first anime produced under this franchise is Touken Ranbu: Hanamaru which premiered in Japan last October with the season’s last episode aired in December the. Unlike its other anime adaptation Katsugeki! Touken Ranbu, Touken Ranbu: Hanamaru was produced by a separate company called Doga Kobo.

An anime film of Katsugeki! Touken Ranbu will have a theatrical film project as well.
