"Cutie Honey" Returns with a Reanimation in 2018

From 1994 to 2018, the shounen series “Cutie Honey” is officially making its return. In commemoration of the 50th anniversary of Go Nagai’s works, the series will receive a new anime titled, “Cutie Honey Universe.”

Acting as the director for the production is Akitoshi Yokoyama, who prior to this, majorly worked as a key animator and storyboard artist. They will be working at Production Reed along with Natsuko Takahashi, the series composer for the production who is known for having worked on the script of “Chrono Crusade.” Last but not least, Syuuchi Iseki, the animation director behind the “Dragon Dentist” specials will be the character designer and chief animation director for the production.

There is no cast confirmed for the production yet but starting on December 29, in commemoration of the anime’s reveal, there will be a special hug pillow to be sold by EXIT TUNES at their Comic Market 93 booth. There is only a limited number of the product and sales will run until December 31. Another thing to note is the key visual to mark the anime announcement.

“Cutie Honey” is a shounen manga series that was written and illustrated by Go Nagai. The series was released in 1973 under the serialization of Weekly Shounen Champions and ran until April 1974 with 2 volumes. The anime adaptation for the series later came out in October 1973 and ran for a total of 25 episodes before ending in May 1974. It was directed by Tomoharu Katsumata and written by Masaki Tsuji with Toei Animation as the production studio. Followed after the manga was a variety of manga works for the franchise.

The story of the series tells of Honey Kisaragi, an android girl who is able to transform into the busty, red or pink-haired heroine Cutie Honey. She battles against an assortment of evil who threaten her and the world and one her trademarks as a character involving not only the temporary loss of all her clothing in the brief interim from changing from one form to the other but also the fact that she is the first female protagonist of a shounen manga series according to Nagai.
