From teaser to trailer, an official look into the live-action adaptation of Yukito Kishiro’s sci-fi manga, “Battle Angel Alita” is now out. Set to be released in July 2018, the film is titled as “Alita: Battle Angel”
The noted staff so far includes Robert Rodriguez, known for his work over the “Spy Kid” trilogy and “The Adventures of Sharkboy and Lavagirl” film will be acting as the director of the production. James Cameron, who is highly recognized for his work over “The Terminator” and “Avatar” will be working as the producer of the film alongside his Lightstorm Entertainment partner Jon Landau.
Starring in the film as the title character herself is, Rosa Salazar a Canadian actress known for her role as Brenda in the “Maze Runner” films, “The Scorch Trials” and “The Death Cure.” With her are Christoph Waltz, who recently played a role in “The Legend of Tarzan”, Mahershala Ali, an American actor and rapper, and Ed Skrein, the man behind Francis Freeman/Ajax in “Deadpool.”
The basis of the film, “Battle Angel Alita” is a manga series that was created by Yukito Kishiro in 1990. Serialized by Shueisha’s Business Jump magazine, the series ran for a total of 9 volumes before ending in 1995. During the course of its run, the series gained two original video animation (OVA) adaptations based off on two of the nine volumes in 1993. The episodes were titled “Rusty Angel” and “Tears Sign.”
Set in a post-apocalyptic future, the story takes focus on a cyborg with no memories named Alita. Found at a garbage heap by a cybernetics doctor, she is rebuilt and taken care by her. At one point she discovers one memory, and it is of the legendary cyborg martial art Panzer Kunst. This memory results in her becoming a Hunter Warrior or bounty hunter and from then on the series follows her journey as she attempts to rediscover her past and the characters whose lives she impacts on her journey.
For the film, it will be adapting “the spine story” of the original manga, with a specific focus on the first four books and will be including the fictional sport “Motorball” from the third and fourth volume.
