The Berserk Manga Makes a December Return

Posted in: Anime News

Months has passed since the announcement of the “Berserk” manga hiatus back in June. When it was announced a winter return had been noted and now it had been confirmed that Kentarou Miura’s manga will be returning in the 2018 issue of the Hakusensha’s Young Animal magazine.

It was in this year’s 24th issue of the magazine that the announcement of the manga’s return on December 22 was made. With the return of the manga here will be a coloured page to be found. This is not the first time that the series had entered a hiatus as prior to this the manga had gone into a hiatus that lasted from September 2016 to Match 2017.

“Berserk” which is written and illustrated by Kentaro Miura, was first released in 1988 as a prototype. The actual series was released in 1989 in the magazine Monthly Animal House, before it was replaced in 1992 by the semi-monthly magazine Young Animal. It was in the seventh issue of the magazine that sipped on March 24 that Miura resumed the manga.

The 38th volume of the series had been released in Japan on June 23 and by Dark Horse Comics in English on July 5 when the series entered its hiatus. During this time Hakusensha also published the first novel in the Berserk franchise, Berserk: Flame Dragon Knight, on June 23. Written by Makoto Fukami, the novel holds an original story that takes focus on the character Grunbeld, a member of the reformed Band of the Hawk, and an exceedingly strong apostle.

As for the main story of the series, it tells of Guts, a superhumanly strong warrior who wields a large sword. Set in a world filled with demons, corrupt and decadent nobles, and other horrors, he battles against demons who are attracted to the curse branded on him after a traumatic event. It is in this dark and medieval land that he wanders on a quest to slay a former friend turned demon, who took everything away from him.
An anime adaptation of the series came out in October 1997 covering the series’ Golden Age arc by Oriental Light and Magic with a total of 25 episodes and running until the end of March 1998. Most recently a second anime adaptation began broadcasting on July 1, 2016.
