After the First: Taishou Chicchai-san

Posted in: Anime News

Synopsis

A young man by the name of Hiiragi Kyouichirou was heading to Tokyo in order to study in university, but due to stray thought and possibly his family sword, he ends up getting involved in a plot for the Imperial Army

First Impression

Being an episode with only 3-minutes for plot introduction, it was impressive on how much the anime was able to squeeze in in that short amount of time. From the general but simple background and character monologue to the comedy scenes when he discovers that he has turned into a chibi, there was just so much to enjoy in that short amount of time. Another impressive thing is the opening, only 29 seconds or so in and you can’t help but bob your head along with it with how catchy it is. Still with the short amount of time there was also some misses to consider as well, though not many seeing as it is only the first episode. The only main issue so far is that there were a few cliches here and there.

General Impression

The overall story hold up strong for the series along with the comedy but the same cannot be sid over the structure of each episode. While it is nice to see the different perspectives, the segways at the end and the beginning of the episodes is not all that great. What’s more while there was some creativity placed over the characters, there was some rather clear cliches on them, a prime example is the brooding and dark character. Still, the drama that manages to slip in into the episodes make up for this along with the comedy. While the plot structure could use some work along with the characters, the series has worked well so far as a supernatural work.

Conclusion

As a short series, a heavy plot is not all that expected, but for the most part it was able to dish out a good amount of drama and comedy. On the other hand, the plot structure is not all that great given the segways of the ending and beginnings and the cliche points of the characters don’t really help. Still, their dynamics help and the overall portrayals work rather well. So as a supernatural work, it has worked well so far.
