A Second Live Action Gintama Film is Confirmed for Summer 2018

There has been quite the success for the first live-action film of comedy series, “Gintama” and special announcement has been made on its official Twitter. It has been confirmed that a sequel film has been approved and slated for the summer holiday in 2018.

Also confirmed is Yuichi Fukuda’s return as the director for the live. It was he who released the news of the sequel at the release memorial event for the first film’s DVD/Blu-ray held at the UDX theater in Tokyo. With him at the event was Shun Oguri who played the role of Gintama in the first film; there is no confirmation as of yet on his role for the second film. For now, the official Twitter of the work only states that further details would be revealed at a later date.

The first live-action “Gintama” film was released in July 14, 2017 in Japan. During its run, the film earned an impressive 3.84 billion yen (about 34 million US dollars). From this the film had earned the title of the top-grossing live-action Japanese film of the summer.

The cast for the work mainly consisted of:

Shun Oguri as Gintoki Sakata
Masaki Suda as Shinpachi Shimura
Kanna Hashimoto as Kagura
Yūya Yagira as Toshiro Hijikata

The original “Gintama” series first began as a manga series written and illustrated by Hideaki Sorachi. It was serialized Shueisha’s Weekly Shōnen Jump since December 8, 2003 and currently has 70 volumes. There have been a number of adaptations of the series from anime, to films and even a light novel series. Currently the franchise is running its latest anime series, “
Gintama.: Porori-hen.”

Set in an alternative Edo period, “Gintama” tells of world conquered by aliens named Amanto and where samurais, who had risen for the defense of the earth end up getting their swords taken away in result of the surrender of the Shogun. The hero of this tale is samurai named Gintoki Sakata. Together with his companions Shinpachi Shimura and Kagura, they form a freelancer group known as the “Yorozuya” or literally “The Anything Store” to not pay for the monthly rent.
