Coming in January 2028 is another live action adaptation to join the rest. This time the work to be adapted is the 1989 manga series, “Video Girl Ai.” Set to be released in TV Tokyo’s 30-minute midnight programming block "Saturday Drama 24”, the series is entitled as “Denei Shoujo: VIDEO GIRL AI 2018.”

The new series will be taking place 25 years after original and will be featuring 23-year- old Shuhei Nomura playing as protagonist Youta Moteuchi’s nephew Shou. In the story, Shou lives with his uncle Youta Moteuchi in the aftermath of his parent’s divorce while also dealing with regular high school boy things such as an unrequited crush with his classmate Nanami. Seeing as she is in love with his best friend Tomoaki, he finds a bleak future in romance.

However, a discovery he makes one day may change things for him. It is a video tape and upon playing it on a dusty VCR, a “Video Girl,” who was sealed 25 years ago, pops out through the screen a thus begins a strange joint life for three months.

Directing the serie is Kazuaki Seki, who previously worked as the unit director of the opening of “The Perfect Insider” series. Working on the screenplay is Kouhei Kiyasu, who previously worked as a voice for a variety of roles.

The original series, “Video Girl Ai” was originally a manga series that was created by Masakazu Katsura and published by Shueisha’s Weekly Shōnen Jump. The series spanned a total of 15 volumes before ending in 1992.

This is not the first time that the series has gained a live action adaptation. In 1991 the franchise released a live action film which mainly focused on the first volume of the series but with certain differences. Followed after was a six part OVA in 1992 and a light novel series in 1993.

The story of the series takes focus on Youta Moteuchi. In the aftermath of having his heart broken he discovers a dimly lit video store while on his way home. Upon entering it he ends up purchasing a “video girl” tape meant to ease the hearts of lonely men. When he plays it on his broken VCR however, a beautiful girl named Ai suddenly leaps out his TV and lands on his bed.

With this beautiful girl before him, Youta believes he may now have a chance at true love. The problem however, due to his broken VCR, there are some troubling things shown through her personality. Still, even with this trouble, Ai promises she will ensure Youta finds happiness and true love in his life.
