Revolutionary Girl Utena Reaches its 20th Anniversary with an Exhibition

Starting on November 16, a special celebration will be held for the “Revolutionary Girl Utena series” at the Tobu Department Store Ikebukuro located in Tokyo. Titled as the “Girl Revolutionary Utena TV Anime Broadcast 20th Anniversary Exhibition: Memory of the Roses and the Revolution, Absolute Fate Apocalypse”, there will be different staff features to expect.

The event will be running until November 20, but prior to this a number of events will be held for the celebration. On November 18 there will be a talk show and autograph session to be held with creator Chiho Saito and director Kunihiko Ikuhara making their appearance. Prior to this event there will be a lottery to be held for tickets to the autograph session on November 16 and 17. However, the lottery will only be made available to those who make a purchase of up to 3240 yen in goods.
Another option for fans, seeing as there will be around 450 items for exhibition including merchandise, is to make a purchase of more than 6480 yen and be able to receive 2 tickets and 2 drawing tickets for the autograph session. Aside from the sessions and lotteries to be held, there will be an exhibition of pieces on the show to enjoy along with merchandise including, bags, stationery items and even a bundle CD with benefits. In addition to all of this there will also be a Twitter campaign to be held for the event.

“Revolutionary Girl Utena”, as stated is a creation of Chiho Saito. It is an urban fantasy manga series that was released in June 1996 under the serialization of “Ciao.” The manga lasted for a total of 5 volumes before ending in 1997 and opening the anime adaptation under the J.C. Staff studio. Officially released in April 1997 the series ran for a total of 39 episodes before it reached its finale in December 1997. Following the series was an anime film, a video game and even stage shows.

The story of the series was broken into four arcs and told of the different struggles that Utena had to face at Ohtori Academy in order to maintain her title as the owner of the Rose Bride and protector over Anthy. For those who wish to challenge Utena, they must undergo the Rose Crest challenge and engage in a sword fight that will last until an one knocks away the opponent’s rose with his or her blade.
