Mascots and Skaters Come Together with a Sanrio x Yuri!!! On Ice Collaboration

Posted in: Anime News

Another collaboration is up for the highly popular ice skating series, “Yuri!!! On Ice.” This time the collaboration is with the company known for their cute iconic mascots including Hello Kitty, Sanrio.

The first feature of the collaboration is a character shop with a name translating to “Yuri x Sanrio Characters: The Character Shop.” Opening for a limited time of September 8 to 24 at Ikebukuro Marui, the shop will be featuring limited goods and illustrations for the event.

On the note of illustrations, illustrations for the collaboration have been released and they depict the main trio of the anime as not only drawn in the Sanrio art style but also has them being depicted as a certain Sanrio mascot.

For the protagonist Yuuri Katsuki, he is matched with the sporty white dog Pochacco. Then for his coach and five-time champion Victor Nikiforov, he is made out as the good natured golden retriever Pompompurin. Lastly, for the temperamental Yuri Plisetsky, with his love for cats, is matched with none other than the iconic mascot herself, Hello Kitty.

However the three are not the only ones to be treated with a Sanrio style art as Viktors beloved canine, Makkachin also gets treated to their own Sanrio art with them wearing a little beret. All illustrations will be placed onto limited goods including acrylic badges and key chains.

The last feature noted for this collaboration is a stamp rally that will be taking place at the following stores:

Animate Ikebukuro Store
Sanrio Gift Gate Ikebukuro Store
Sanrio Marchen Gallery

The last place that a fan can get a tamp is at the collaboration character store. Should a fan get enough stamps, which is 4 stamps out of the listed places, they will be able to receive their own original good.

The “Yuri!!! On Ice” series is a MAPPA produced anime released in 2016 with a total of 12 episodes. Directed by Sayo Yamamoto and written by Mitsurō Kubo the skating series gained a large following in the span of its run and even after the series finished there have been many who still praise the show and a variety of collaborations and merchandising to keep the show’s presence strong.

The story of the series tells of Japanese skater Yuuri Katsuki, who after failing at the GPX, finds himself lost in his skating career. Thus he decides to finish his schooling and head back to his home in Hasetsu. When he arrives home he meets up with an old friend at a skating rink he once went to for solace and performs for her a favourite piece of his idol, Viktor Nikiforov.

Unknown to him he is filmed by his friend’s children and soon enough the video spreads online and catches the attention of none other than Victor himself. Inspired by the video the five-time champion packs up everything, flies to Hasetsu and declares that he will become Yuuri’s coach and lead him to getting gold at the GPX.
