The ‘your name’ Rip-Off Saga Continues

Posted in: Anime News

Remember that YouTube user Ms. Rachel? Recently, she has become a bit popular due to her uploaded video claiming that Makoto Shinkai’s anime film masterpiece Kimi no na wa or your name. has copied some particular scenes from popular anime movies. This has raised a lot of people’s eyebrows most especially the fans of the movie.

Ms. Rachel has once again uploaded another video this time showing animation stills from The Girl Who Leapt Through Time and Niji-Iro Hotaru Eien no Natsu Yasumi. She compared this with the storyboard sketches that Shinkai made for your name. Compared to her first video that she uploaded, this new video had more images. The end of the video shows an illustration created by Shinkai.

The new video garnered more than 15,000 views on YouTube but received a lot of negative responses from its viewers and commenters. Some commenters wondered if Makoto Shinkai will step up to clear these things out; while the others are convinced that these comparisons are all coincidental and the so-called evidences are insufficient to prove that the director did copy these scenes.

Konosuke Uda, the director of Niji-Iro have stated his comment about the video on Twitter saying that his film might have inspired Shinkai. On another note, he also said that Ms. Rachel’s video might be taking some liberties with using the plagiarism word. He then continued that if the direction of a certain work sufficiently changes its content, then that can be called as original.

As what we have said previously in our first article regarding this case, the final verdict of this matter will be up to you. Regardless of this claim, Kimi no na wa is considered by many anime fans and movie critics as one of the most unique anime movies to date.
