General Impressions: Dragon's House Hunting

Posted in: Anime News

Synopsis

This is the story of a young dragon who was living the good life of a dragon until he messes up and is kicked out of the only home he knew. Thus begins his journey for a comfortable home while facing a variety of creatures including dwarves, elves, and even orcs.

The Good

In the realm of the fantasy drama, the majority tells of a regular human ending up in a fantastical world and growing into a grand hero of the realm or a tale of a world in turmoil and amongst the different beings a change is about to rise. All these had one thing in common, the hero was either a human with power or a being that relatively looked human enough. Now not only is the protagonist a dragon of all things, rather than be a highly dignified being or a gruff terror, this “grand” being resembles a more pampered prince than anything in terms of attitude and that what makes the comedy tale work so well. Such a contrast to use in comedy is a refreshing thing to see in a story.

Speaking of the story; it’s interesting in its own way and the way the art pops out in laying out the different scenarios with its great detail especially on the houses and creatures. Overall, the art is really well done, the story is interesting enough that a reader would get curious on what happened next and the characters are both silly but endearing in their own ways.

The Bad

The story of the entire series seems more like a stretched out sketch rather than an actual plot with a rising action and a conflict, True, it could be said the conflict is the search for a good home but there’s not much depth in terms of plot if that is the case. The characters also, while portrayed differently, are not entirely as dynamic in terms of personality as one would think with a new story involving an unorthodox protagonist and rather eccentric side characters. Overall, a more concrete plot and improved character interaction would do well for the series.

Conclusion

It’s a somewhat silly but generally fun manga to read with well detailed art and enjoyable characters to keep the story interesting. But the fact that the plot is simply a sketch being extended can be a bit lacklustre even if the series gives interesting and intricate scenes for the “houses” that they get into. The dynamic and the relationship between the characters could have done better with a little more interaction and little moments between them would have improved the stories in terms of transition given how they can be somewhat kick and off-kilt.
