Tim Burton’s “Nightmare Before Christmas” has made its way to the manga community with a sequel to be released by Tokyopop.
Titled Nightmare Before Christmas: Zero’s Journey, the manga was announced on Monday via The Hollywood Reporter and is a sequel to the 1993 film. DJ Milky, also known as Stu Levy, the founder of Tokyopop, is the writer of the manga and he will be working with Studio DICE, who will be providing the art, having previously worked on the “Beauty and the Beast” manga.
Set to be released in spring 2018, the tale of the manga tells of Zero, who is Jack Skellington’s ghost dog, and his adventure as he gets lost in Christmas Town. Prior to this however, Tokyopop did in fact do a previous manga adaptation of the popular with Jun Asuka as the artist and Natsuki Minami providing the cover of the manga, which is the image placed above.
The work will be released at comic book stores in full-color single issues and following this there will be a publication of the work in two different graphic novels in a full-color trade paperback format and black-and-white “pocket-sized” volume format.
Tokyopop is an American distributor, licensor, and publisher of anime, manga, manhwa, and Western manga-style works. It was founded in 1997 by Stuart J. Levy and was formerly known as Mixx Entertainment which published and a magazine known as MixxZine. The magazine published a number of popular series including the classic series “Sailor Moon” before it discontinued and turned into Tokyopop. Before it discontinued however, it was able crate the magazine “Smile”, which capitalized on the popularity of “Sailor Moon” and is half girls’ magazine, and half shōjo manga anthology. Now the distributor is a well-known name in distributing a variety of comics and manga works in the west side of the world.
“The Nightmare Before Christmas” is a stop-motion animated dark fantasy musical film created by Tim Burton in 1993. Stemmed from a poem which Burton had made in 1982, the tale of the film tells of Jack Skellington, a.k.a, the “Pumpkin King” of Halloween Town. Upon stumbling into a portal into Christmas Town, he finds himself enchanted by the holiday and sets off to celebrate it, only for there to be some heavy but comedic consequences.
