Saint Seiya Returns as CGI

28 years after its anime series has ended, “Saint Seiya”, the mythic fiction series created by Masami Kurumada makes a comeback as Netflix original work for 2018.

Revealed on Wednesday at the “Netflix Anime Slate 2017” held at Tokyo, the series is to be adapted into a CGI animation with 12 episodes and the tentative title of "Knights of the Zodiac: Saint Seiya.”

Featuring the Galaxian Wars to Silver Saints manga arcs, Yoshiharu Ashino, the director of “D.Gray-man Hallow”, is acting as director for the series and will be working at Toei Animation. Eugene Son, recognized for his work as the “Duel Master’s” script writer, is working as the story editor and head writer of the series.

Designing the character is Terumi Nishii, the character designer for “JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure: Diamond Is Unbreakable.” Working with him for the costumes of the characters is Takashi Okazaki, the character designer for the world of OZ in “Summer Wars.” More details on the staff will be revealed at a later date.

The tale of “Saint Seiya” tells of five mystical warriors known as the “Saints” or in some adaptations, the “Knights.” With their “Cloths” sacred armors designed from the various constellations from which the characters have adopted as their destined guardians, they rise to battle.

And in defense against other Olympian gods who want to dominate Earth and the protection of the Greek Goddess Athena’s reincarnation, they bear power of mystical energy called “Cosmo.”

It was in 1986 that the manga series was first published and was serialized by Weekly Shounen Jump until 1990 with a total of 28 volumes. Toei Animation produced the anime adaptation of the series in 1986 and ran the series until 1986 with a total of 114 episodes.

More than an anime series, “Saint Seiya” has also gained and OVA, six films, and even a spinoff manga. Said spinoff manga is titled “Saint Seiya: Next Dimension – The Myth of Hades” and is currently ongoing. Most recently it was announced that the series would be getting a live-action Hollywood film but no further news has been revealed on this.
