An Update Released for the Studio Ghibli Catalog On Blu-ray And DVD

Posted in: Anime News

An update has been released for GKids’ plans in bringing the highly praised films of Studio Ghibli to North America. When news first came out that the international family film distributor would be releasing the films on Blu-ray and DVD, there was much questions asked by fans. Now those questions are answered and officially, the Blu-ray and DVD editions containing a number of Ghibli works will be released starting on October 17.

The initial set released on this date will be containing “Spirited Away”, “Howl’s Moving Castle”, “Kiki’s Delivery Service”, “Ponyo” and “Princess Mononoke.” Followed after this on October 31 is a plan including “Castle in the Sky” and “Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind.”

In its most recent social media posts, the company released notes relaying answers to frequently asked questions for the release. During the first announcement of the Blu-ray /DVD editions, the company expressed that they may have gotten “carried away” upon announcing in a post that “all” works would found when the editions were released.

According to the statement, the actual press release had more concrete details on the announcement and it will only be “Grave of the Fireflies” that will be part of the collection due to it having no representation in the U.S.

It is noted that for every film there will be three subtitles streams for the films, one English sub, one Japanese sub and one English SDH (dubtitles) with the possibility of there being a French stream should it be on the Japanese Blu-ray. With how particular Ghibli is with the distribution of their works, they will be the ones to make approval of GKids editions.

Upon the release of the Blu-ray/DVD in October, there will also be catalog to be released as with each Blu-ray, there will be a translated booklet and the Blu-ray/DVD combo will be having O-cards.

GKids also have other plans including the following films:

Porco Rosso
Pom Poko
Whisper of the Heart
My Neighbors the Yamadas
The Cat Returns
Tales of the Earthsea
The Secret World of Arrietty
